  • What do you get out of this?

The short answer is not much yet, I hope to eventually get courses to pay me to put their information and pictures on the site. For now I'd be happy if I could get a few free rounds to take pictures for the course walk section. Just call me Kevin "will work for golf" Meek. If you know of any golf course advertising folks who would be interested in having their info on our site let me know, or if anyone wants to invite me to their club that would be fine too!.

  • What is the course walk feature?

This is a link I created that allows a user who is looking at the details of a round click on a score see a picture of the hole to remind them how they could have possibly shot 8 on a par 4! It also allows a user to walk a course hole by hole and preview / review a course from the comfort of your home. Try it from one of your score details by clicking on the actual digit of any score, Or Click here for an example

  • Is the handicap official?

No.  FairwayFiles is not affiliated in any way with the USGA.  If you want to get a USGA handicap you need to join or form a USGA Licensed golf club.  More information about how handicaps are calculated

The handicaps provided here are for social / recreational purposes only, while not recognized or accepted by the USGA, they will allow you to even the playing field with your friends.

  • What are rating and slope?

    Course Rating
The Course Rating a measure provided by the USGA that represents the number of strokes a scratch golfer would shoot for a particular set of tees under normal conditions. It is based on yardage and hazards that would effect a scratch golfer.
    Slope Rating
The Slope Rating is a measure that identifies the relative difficulty of a course for players who are not scratch golfers compared to the Course Rating. The lowest Slope Rating is 55 and the highest is 155. The average slope Slope Rating is 113.

Click here for an explaination of rating and slope are used to calculate your handicap

    2013-07-27 23:01:08

  • What do you mean by tees?

Most golf courses have several sets of tees. Typically White for Men, Red for Ladies, Blue or Black for "Real Men". Each set of tees has a different slope and rating. When you play you select the tees that are appropriate for your ability or the level of challenge you want. Obviously if you shoot a 75 from the black tees that is much better than from the whites. Be sure you select the appropriate tees when you enter your score, and verify that the rating and slope in the system match the ones on the card for the tees you played. If the tees that you played are not in the system you will have to enter the information for that set of tees before entering your round.

  • Can I add scores for the other people in my foursome?

Yes, but only if you belong to a common group. When you add a score you get a drop down with all people who are members of any group you belong to.
You do not need to be the group administrator, any group member can add a score for any other group memeber. I recommend creating a group that includes the people you regularly play with. This will allow you to easily add scores for them and also monitor their handicap, print match scorecards and see cool hole by hole graphs when you play together.

    2000-08-24 22:19:33

  • Can I track my handicap if I only play 9 holes?

The FairwyFiles handicap calculations only work with 18 hole scores However, you could estimate your score for unplayed holes. One could argue that what you shot on the front nine is a good estimate of what you would shoot on the back nine. (Some may argue otherwise however). I suggest you just enter the same score for the back as you got on the front.

Another alternative would be to wait until you have 2 nine hole scores and enter them as an 18 hole score.

  • How do you convert your handicap index into the number of strokes you should get on a given course.

Your Fairwayfiles index is a relative index so people who play on different courses can compare on equal ground. Depending on the course / tees you play the number of strokes you get will vary.

    To calculate your Course Handicap.
Multiply your Handicap Index by the Slope Rating and divide by 113.
This must be rounded to a whole number (i.e. round up on .5 or more)
Note: If you print a match score card before you play it will calculate this for you and your playing partners and show you which holes strokes should be given.
The match scorecard feature can be found under the courses list -- click on Enter score and then select Match scorecard.

    2013-07-29 08:00:53

  • I used the "Quick Score" feature and now I would like to add my hole by hole score. How can I do this?

Click on the scores link on the top toolbar and you should see an edit link. This will allow you to pencil icon that will let you edit your score and you can enter hole by hole details from here if you like

    2013-06-02 10:18:23

  • Is there a maximum score you are allowed to post on a hole based on your handicap?

You are reffering to Equitable Stroke Control. If you enter score details, the system will automatically adjust for ESC when calculating your handicap.

As of January 2020, the "maximum" score you can take is NET Double Bogey.  Your Net score after adjusting for handicap cannot be greater than a double bogie.

The system will automatically adjust for handicap calculation purposes - so you shoudl always enter your actual score -- which is what counts for the match you are playing.  The score details page will show if any adjustments were made when calculating your fairwayfiles index.

    2000-11-12 14:25:42

  • If I have created a group, can other members of the group access it, also? If so, how?

Only the owner of the group can add or delete members. Do this from the find user screen. Enter your friends names and perform a user search. The results screen has checkboxes on the left for add to group (assuming you are the owner of at least one group). Check the boxes of the people you want to add to your group and press the add to group button after selecting the group you want from the drop down. Once you have added other people to your group they will see the group memebers scores on their profile page, and will see the group when they click on the groups link on the bottom toolbar.

If the person you added does not have any scores in the system they will not be listed.

  • How can I remove a player from a group?

Click on the groups button on the top toolbar. Then click on the group name on the left hand column. This will show members of that group. Click the red X for the player you want to delete.

  • I made a mistake on the date played. How can I change the date.

The only way to correct this is to delete the score and re-add it. You can delete the score by clicking on the scores button on the bottom toolbar, and then clicking delete on the score you want to delete.

  • How can I enter a course that has 27 holes?

For courses with 3 nines, each combination of nines needs to be entered as a separate course.

Assuming you have white, red and blue nines, I suggest using names like:
    Rancho Bernardo - White-Blue
    Rancho Bernardo - Blue-Red
    Rancho Bernardo - Red-White

Just try and be consistent with the naming so it looks nice in the list. Then each set of tees can have a different slope and rating for each of the 3 combination.

Handicaps will typically be entered 1-9 on each nine. You will have to adjust them. The front nine being even numbers from 2-18 and the second nine odd numbers from 1-17.
For example the BLUE - WHITE course :

    WHITE nine (Front)
    Hdcp 1 => 2
    Hdcp 2 => 4
    Hdcp 3 => 6
    Hdcp 4 => 8
    Hdcp 5 => 10
    Hdcp 6 => 12
    Hdcp 7 => 14
    Hdcp 8 => 16
    Hdcp 9 => 18

    WHITE nine (back)
    Hdcp 1 => 1
    Hdcp 2 => 3
    Hdcp 3 => 5
    Hdcp 4 => 7
    Hdcp 5 => 9
    Hdcp 6 => 11
    Hdcp 7 => 13
    Hdcp 8 => 15
    Hdcp 9 => 17

  • Where do I find my current index in your system?

On your home page your handicap index is listed at the top of the left hand column.

    2001-01-17 22:06:52

  • I entered my own scores originally, now I wish to create a group; when I attempt to do this, the system sends me to the "find a user" section. I can't find him unless I put him in the group first. How do I do this?

You use the find user screen to perform a query of all the registered users. The search results screen has a checkbox to select who you want to add to your group. Just check the box of your friends and click the add to group button. Repeat until all your friends have been added.

If you have more than one group that you are the owner for you will have a drop down to allow you to select which group you want to add the selected players to.

NOTE: Each player must have their own login, you can use the logoff button on the bottom tool bar to log out if you want to create a new account for your friends from your same computer. Once you the everyone has an account any group member can add scores for the other memebers (there will be a drop down).

  • How do I print a scorecard for my group?

Printing a scorecard that identifies the holes you need to give people strokes is one of the cool features of this site. Since the number of strokes you will get depends on the course (and tees) you play, you first need to select a course.

    1. Click on the courses link on the bottom toolbar.
    2. Type in part of the course name in the search box or search by state or use the link on the top left to show courses you've played before.
    3. Click on Enter Score to get a listing of the tees.
    4. Click on the Match Scorecard link next to the tees you will be playing. This will bring up a list of all the people who are in any of your groups.
    5. Check the checkbox next to the ones who will play and click the print scorecard button.

Editors Note: As I type this I realize this is not very intuitive. I will improve this when I get a chance and add a link from the courses screen that will allow you to pick the players and the Tees on a single screen eliminating the need to click on Enter Score to get to this point.

      2001-03-24 22:13:12

  • The course I am trying to enter does not have a rating or slope at this time - how do I enter the course without this? It won't let me enter it without this information.

You'll have to estimate the rating and slope.

The "average" slope is 113. The hardest courses I know of have slopes of 140-145. If your course is an average course use 113 or adjust up or down on your estimate of the difficulty. Rating is the score a Pro would shoot on your course -- on easy courses typically a few strokes below par. Again it's your call if this is not a rated course.

    2001-03-25 23:51:35

  • How do I add users for my group? Several of our members do not have internet access?

In order to add a user to a group you must first create an account for them. It is not a problem if they don't have a computer -- you can do it from your computer. Simply log off using the logoff link on the bottom toolbar and then click on the home page. This will bring up the logon screen where you can follow the link to create a new user. If they don't have an email address you can use your email.

After the group is created anyone in the group can add scores for other group memebers so you don't have to keep login in and out as different users.

  • My husband and I are on the same computer. He is already registered. When I go to register my name his name keeps coming up. We have different e-mail names how come this happens and what do we do about it.

Use the Logoff button at the right of the bottom toolbar. Then log in as yourself. If you create a group and make both of you members you won't need to log out and back in because you can add scores for other group members and view their profiles by clicking on their name.

  • Have you been able to add year to date stats on fairways hit add greens in regulation

This is still in the works -- hopefully it will be up by the end of April.

  • Can you change your password, and if so, how?

Click the Edit Profile link on the left toolbar after you are logged in.

    2010-07-23 23:19:29

  • What does it mean by "Fairways Hit" and "Greens Hit"??

Fairways hit is a statistic that tracks driving accuracy by recording the number of fairways a user has reached off the tee. If you want to track this statistic you must edit your profile and check the box for Fairways Hit.

Greens Hit is a statistic that track the number of Greens In Regulation. If a player reaches a green in 2 strokes or more below the par for that hole it is considered a Green In regulation or a GIR. Again if you want to track this edit your profile using the Personal Info Link on the bottom toolbar and check the appropriate box then click update account.

    2001-04-21 23:29:07

  • Is there a way to enter your final score without entering a score on each individual hole?

If the course and tees you played are already in the system you can enter just the Front and Back nine scores and do the quick add. But if the course doesn't exist in the system you'll need the card to enter it because the slope, rating and hole by hole handicaps are required. (This info is needed to print match scorecards showing which holes you get strokes)

    2001-04-24 17:50:04

  • The course I play on is only a 9 hole course. I have found out after adding it in the database that you can't just post a score for 9 holes. Is there anyway that this could be set up to take a score for only nine holes.

No. The only thing you can do if you mostly play nine holes is to enter your score twice to make an 18 hole round.

For courses that only have 9 holes, there is probably not a rating and slope -- so if you want to enter it you will have to estimate the rating and slope. FYI the average rating is 113 adjust up or down based on course difficulty.

    2013-07-27 23:05:49

If you make a mistake entering your score can edit the entry by clicking on the Edit link next to the score you want to edit on the scores page. To get to the scores page click on the Scores link on the bottom toolbar.

There is also an edit link when viewing the score details which can be accessed from a variety of places on the site including by clicking on the score shown in the recent rounds by your friends box or clicking on the details link on the Anatomy of your handicap page.

NOTE:You can only edit your own scores - even if you entered the score for another member of your group. They will have to log in and make the correction. This is to keep other people from editing your scores.

    2001-06-20 23:12:52

  • The rounds included in handicap is always at 1. Is that saying that my handicap is based only on 1 round? If so how do I change to get an accurate hdcp.

Play more rounds. There is a link called "Explanation of your handicap" that explains how many rounds count towards your hadicap. It is accessible from the Anatomy of your h andicap link on your profile page.

    2001-05-11 21:14:51

  • How do I change a players profile to include their putts, greens and fairways?

Each player must click on the Personal Info on the bottom toolbar to adjust the level of detail they want to track. Once they've chosen to track putts, greens etc. they can enter that information when they enter their scores.

Once scores have been entered with detail information, a summary will show up on the user's profile page (on the right hand column above the graphs).

    2001-05-29 23:22:12

  • Is there a way to print a scorecard to use for analyzing the course played - in other words with boxes to mark fairways, greens, putts and strokes?

I'll add this to the todo list. The current scorecard is primarily for match play, and shows holes you get strokes on from your playing partners.

    2001-05-15 22:23:08

  • If you are entering scores for more than one player how do you delete other player scores if they are erroneous. I can only find a delete on my own scores.

You have to log in as that player to delete their scores. This is for security reasons. I'm sure you wouldn't want people deleteing your scores right!

    2001-05-15 22:21:24

  • Where do I post name of my home course?

You don't really have to have a home course in the system. The Handicap displayed on the main page is your handicap index which is normalized and can be applied to any course you play. Use the match scorecard feature to print out a card with your handicap for a given course.

When entering scores you can have click on the link to pick courses from courses you've played. In the future this will be configurable so you can make that the default screen for entering scores.

Every course is your home course!

    2001-05-18 21:50:45

  • Does your software adjust for Equitable Stroke Control or is it up to me to make that adjustment?

The system will adjust your score for Equitable Stroke Control when calculating your handicap. You should enter you actual score. The score will be saved as is, but the handicap index for that round (which is used in the calculation of your handicap) will be adjusted for Equitable Stroke Control if necessary.

A summary of the adjustment, if there is any, will be displayed after you save the record and on the score details screen.

    2001-12-23 09:51:39

  • What about 3 Par courses. Can those be figured into your handicap?

I'm not sure. Do they have a rating and slope? If not I'd bet we can't do it, unless you want to make one up but I'm not sure how accurate that would be.

    2001-05-29 22:41:20

  • How can I see the Champion history for my group?

Click on the groups link on the bottom toolbar. Then select a group from the list on the left -- the initial screen on the right pane shows everyone in any group to which you belong, not a specific group.

When a specific group has been selected there is a link to show the champion history on the top.

How the group champion is calculated. In my family we have a trophy for the Reigning Champion. To win it you have to beat the current champ. This link shows a history of trophy holders. It starts with the first round played between any group members. Then it walks forward looking for possible title defenses by the champ. I.e. rounds played against any other group member. It displays summaries of any title match, and updates the champ if necessary.

  • Can I remove myself from a group?

YES. Click on the Personal Info link on the bottom toolbar. On the bottom of this page is a list of groups you are a member of. You can click the remove link to remove yourself from a group. 2001-06-06 21:23:09

  • How is the number of strokes calculated that is subtracted from the score of a particular to give the net score?

The number of strokes you get on a given course, also known as your course handicap is calculated as follows:

    (Handicap Index X Slope Rating) / 113

This is rounded to a whole number to tell you how many strokes you get. So as you see the strokes you get depend on the course and tees that you play. The Match Scorecard feature performs this calculation for a given set of tees for anyone you are playing with and even shows which holes you give or get strokes based on the hole handicaps. You can find the Match Scorecard link next to the course names under the course search sections.

    2001-06-03 13:58:19

  • How can I change my Screen name? I have a few screen names, How can I change to the one that I use with my friends and family.

If you really do have 2 accounts created, You can click on the logoff button on the bottom toolbar and log back in with another username. I strongly discourage using multiple usernames for a single person. You can be in as many groups as you want only entering your scores once.

If you don't like the username that you made up for yourself there is currently no way to change your username. I'll add that to the todo list if enough people request it.

    2001-06-03 21:39:46

  • If I am a 12 handicap and I play some hacker with a 17 handicap I understand that I should give him 5 strokes(+/- for slope etc.) but I am not a scratch golfer so why should I give him strokes on the 5 hardest holes. shouldnt I give him strokes on handicap holes 13,14,15,16, and 17. We both get strokes on the first 12 holes right? what is the actually ruling on this?

Interesting question. I don't know the ruling on this. If anyone has any comments on this I'd be glad to discuss this. This is something for the discussion lists (also on the todo list).

  • Is this handicap system sanctioned by the USGA, and will my handicap be acknowledged when I enter a tournament?

No. FairwayFiles is not affiliated in any way with the USGA.  If you want to get a USGA handicap you need to join or form a USGA Licensed golf club.

The handicaps provided here are for social / recreational purposes only, while acceptable in USGA events, they will allow you to even the playing field with your friends.

  • When recording putts, whichs putts do you count? Only putts taken on the green, or do you include putts from the fringe, or even putts from farther off of the green?

Personally I count putts taken from the frings, primarily because I expect to get down in 2 from there. If I don't I want to track it in my stats as a poorly played hole i.e. a 3 putt. But it is entirely up to you. I'm sure some purists may argue otherwise.

  • I am wondering if you could add a feature to the scorecard section that would print chicago system points when we make our scorecard? Our group always plays that kind of match.

If you email me details about the chicago system I will consider making this an option. But as of now I don't know how it works.

  • I have six rounds played and my handicap is still calculated on only 1 round. Why?

Becuase that is the USGA formula. I don't make this stuff up :-). Click on the Anatomy of your handicap link on the home page (found on the in the top left) to see the rounds that are included. Click here for the Explaination of How Handicaps are calculated.

  • I have set up a group for a circle of friends. Am I the only one who can add people to this group? I would like to be able to have these other guys join the group rather than me add them.

If I do this, then anyone could join your group. Most people want more control over the group. Eventually I may modify it so you can set up an admin password for you group and if you email that to your buddies they can sign themselves up. But for now only the owner/creator of the group can add members.

  • My course is only a nine hole course, but has a slope and rating. I have tried to enter it as nine or as 18 just repeating the 9, but the system won't let me. It says error and lists repeats for the 2nd nine listings. Can this be changed or can I not enter scores from this course?

The key is you must have unique handicaps for each of the 18 holes. I suggest making the handicaps on the front nine even and the ones on the back nine odd, but keep them in relative sequence. If that makes any sense.

  • I printed a score card for my group, but I don't understand the markings (lines) how do you read it, what do they mean?

The markings on the card is a standard way of identifying which holes a person is getting a stroke.

It reminds you to take the stroke by writing the gross score above the slash and the net score below the slash.

The match scorecard calculates the course handicap for all players based on the rating and slope of the tees being played. Then it makes the lowest handicap person the basis for calculating strokes. THe number of strokes you get will be the difference between your course handicap and the lowest course handicap playing in your group.

Strokes are given on the hardest holes so if you give me 3 strokes then I would get a stroke on each of the 3 hardest holes as identified by the handicap rating on the scorecard.

You can find the match scorecard link on the course listings after selecting by state or doing a search.

  • I recently read in a USGA book that if your handicap is under 10, the maximum number you can take on a hole is 6. On the FAQ's it said double bogey. Which is it? And should I enter the true 7 or the adjusted 6 for my handicap?

This website has no affiliation with the USGA

  • My course is not listed in the search results? How do I add a score for it?

You need to add the course. But before you do that be sure your course is not already in the system with a slightly different spelling. The best way to do this is to click on the find coursde link on the top toolbar and then enter your state and click go -- then  scroll through the list.

If you don't see your course, Click on the Add course link at the bottom of the list. But remember you'll need the scorecard in front of you for the rating, slope and hole by hole handicaps which are required.

And please use care when entering a course because it will be used by everyone else. Use mixed case to keep the system looking good!

  • How Do I delete a score that I put on my wrong name?

Click on the scores link on the bottom toolbar. This will show all scores for the user you are logged in as. There will be a column on the left hand side with a link that will delete the score. You can only delete your own scores. If you entered scores for another user in your group incorrectly you will have to have them log in and delete/edit it. • How do you calculate the slope and the rating

I don't calculate slope and rating. That is usually done by the USGA. They rate courses based on their difficulty and assign a rating and slope. The rating and slope can be found on the scorecard for most courses. There will be a different rating and slope for each set of tees. This allows someone who plays from the white tees to compete evenly (handicap adjusted) with a person who plays from the blue tees.

The average slope is supposed to be 113. The rating is what a scratch golfer would shoot on the course.

The rating and slope are used to convert your score in to a handicap index so you can compare rounds played on different courses and from different tees. This is done using the following formula:

Handicap Index = (Gross Score - Course Rating) * 113 / (Course Slope)

You can also use the slope and rating to figure out how many strokes you should get on a given course from a given set of tees.

Your Course Handicap is (Handicap Index X Slope Rating) / 113. Rounded to a whole number (round up on .5 or more)

For details about how the rating and slope figure into your handicap click here.

  • How do I change the group name?

Click on the groups tab on the bottom toolbar. Then select the group from the list on the left. If you are the administrator (creator) of the group, at the bottom of the group rankings page will be a link that says Edit group name. If you are not the administrator it will tell you who the administrator is and you must contact them to change the name of the group. Only the creator of a group can make changes.

NOTE: If you want to be reomved from a group but are not the administrator you can remove yourself by clicking on the personal info link on the bottom toolbar and using the remove me link next to the group you want to be removed from.

Go to the personal info link on the bottom toolbar. It will show all the groups you are a member of and you can click the link to remove yourself from the group. If you are the creator it will remind you that doing this will remove everyone from the group and give you the oppourtunity to delete the group all together.
NOTE: There is no undo for this if you remove a group the only way to get it back is to create a new group and add all the people again.

    2001-07-28 23:47:13

  • I'm trying to enter a nine hole score under quick score and the screen keeps telling me to use the back key and resubmit?

The system does not accept a nine hole score. You must either enter a front and back score and NO hole by hole details or you must enter hole by hole details for all 18 holes. If you only played nine, my advice is to enter the same score for the back nine.

    2001-07-28 23:47:46

  • Can I find out what my handicap will be on a course that I have never played?

You can find out your handicap on a course you have never played by printing a match scorecard. It calculates your course handicap along with the course handicap for the other people you are playing with.

To find the matchscorecard feature, click on the courses link on the bottom toolbar and search for the course you are playing on the course listing is a column that has links to the match scorecard page.

    2001-08-09 20:56:59

  • On the scores page, what does the strokes column mean, and how are they calculated.

The strokes represent the number of strokes you were to get based on your handicap index at the time you played each round.

The number of strokes is calculated by taking your handicap index, which is a generic number representing your potential and applying it to the difficulty of the course as indicated by the rating and slope using the following formula:

    (Handicap Index X Slope Rating) / 113

Rounded to a whole number (round up on .5 or more)

So for example if I have a handicap index of 15.5 and I play a course with a slope rating of 113 I would get 16 strokes. But If I played a course with a slope rating of 145 I would get 20 strokes. As you can see higher handicap players get more strokes on harder courses.

To find out in advance how many strokes you will get on a particular course, you can print a match scorecard for the course and tees you will be playing and it will apply this formula to your current handicap. The match scorecard links can be found on the same course listing screens where the Enter Score link is found.

  • How do I join a friends group?? The details are cut off in the "Groups Help" page.

Right now the only way to join a group is to have the owner / creator of the group add you as a member.

  • I'm not sure I understand the difference between Handicap and Handicap index. On my "Scores" table there is a very large variation in the index--seems to vary according to the score for that game--but the "strokes" used to arrive at a net score has a more regular change and seems to relate to what I assume the Handicap is at the time.

    2001-08-16 21:28:10

  • Where can I get an updated graph that breaksdown by fairways and greens hit per round -- totals for the year etc.

These and other charts are on the todo list.

    2001-09-17 21:47:35

  • When you go to a new course how do you ajust your handicap to the course rating and slope.

To adjust your handicap index to a course index use the following formula:

Course Handicap = (Handicap Index X Slope Rating) / 113.

The course Handicap is always rounded to the nearest whole number, because this is the number of strokes you will get on this course.

NOTE: This is automatically calculated for you if you use the match scorecard feature.

    2001-09-10 22:17:49

  • What is the distinction betweeen handicap index and handicap differential?

A handicap differntial is a normalized individual golf score. Every time you play the system calculates your hadicap differential for that round by subtracting the course rating from your score and multiplying by 113 and dividing by the course slope.

The differential gives you a number that can be compared equally when you play courses of varying difficulty. By adjusting for slope and rating the differential should indicate how well you played.

Your handicap index is the average of the best 10 of your last 20 handicap differentials. It is what is used when you want to play in a match and give players a handicap. To do this the handicap index is multiplied by the slope and divided by 113 to come up with a course handicap. Which is the number of strokes you would get on that course based on your handicap index. Clear as mud right? This still needs work but at least it is a start.

  • I play in a 9-hole weekly league that alternates between the front and back nine on the same course. Between league play I often play 9-hole rounds at the same course. The GHIN system that tracks our handicap for the league combines 9-hole scores to produce 18-hole scores. I'd like to be able to use your system to track my play on this course in the order that the 9-hole rounds are played, even if it was two front 9's or two back 9's. Do you have a problem with users adding a set of tees such as "RedFF" and "RedBB" for combined rounds that inclued two 9-hole rounds of either the front or back nine?

What would be the rating and slope of such a pseudo-course? But I don't have a problem with it -- you may be the only one who uses the set of tees you add.

  • For my first score entered in the system, should ESC be applied? I am a beginner and shot a 114 for the first round entered in the system, but 11 strokes were taken off due to ESC. My handicap went from 139 before ESC to 129. Is this correct?

I noticed this too. But I'm not sure what to do. Are you saying I should not apply ESC to the 1st round played because you don't have a handicap yet? But won't that overstate your handicap?

I'd like to hear from folks who have opinions on this. Use the feedback link on the bottom toolbar to let me know what you think.

  • Can a golfer have a handicap and an index? I played golf the other day and the other golfers had a handicap and an index. Their index was a few points lower than their handicap. When someone asks me for my golf handicap, do I give them the handicap index calculated in your tracking system?

    You can have both.

Your handicap index is a generic measurement of your golfing potential. Using your handicap index you can calculate your course handicap using the following formula.

    Course Handicap = handicap index * Slope / 113

Your course handicap represents the number of strokes you should get on a particular course (and from a particular set of tees). Your course handicap will vary with the difficulty of the course as measured by the slope.

  • Why does my friends handcap come up lower then mine when I play the same courses as her and my over all stroke total is lower then hers? (I have 20 scores listed and she has 8)

The last part of your question is the answer. Since She only has 8 scores only the lowest one will count. But your handicap is based on the average of 10 of your last 20 scores. People with less than 20 scores handicap will be artificially low. This encourages them to get more scores in as this is a slight penalty when betting.

  • How do I enter into match play with a member of my group?

Call them up and tell them you want to play a match play match. Seriously though -- In match play you just keep track of the number of holes won by each player. Of course you compare scores after adjusting for handicap. To find out which holes you get strokes on against your partner, print a match scorecard -- it will show slashes on the holes where a player gets a stroke.

You can find the match scorecard feature on the course search results screen. There will be a link for each course on the display.

  • What determines who is the Champion in your Group?

The group Champion is determined by starting from the first time any members of the group play. The winner (after handicap adjustment) is the Reigning Champ. The system then looks for the next time that person plays with someone in your group. This would be a title defense. In order to become the champ you must beat the reigning champ. So only matches in which the champion plays can be considered title matches. Obviously when all members of your group play in a tournament the winner will become the new champion.

No fair turning down a challenge when you are the champ to hold the title either :-)

  • I won't be golfing again until next April or May. What would you suggest I do, that is, should I delete my scores from 2001 and start fresh, and if so, how would I do this. Thank You

Don't delete your scores. The system is designed to keep scores across muiltiple years. Your home page will display stats broken out by year so you can see how your game is progressing.

  • My daughter has just taken up the game. She is fourteen and shot a 132. I would like to create a group (which i did) and add her to my group. I could not add her to my group or add her to the system. Could you please help.

To add someone to the system from the same PC that you are currently logged in with, requires that you first log out then return to the home page and follow the create a new account link.

Once she has her own account you can add her to your group (see the group help page for details on how to do this )

Once you have your group set up,any member of the group can add scores for other memebers without having to log in and out as the appropriate user.

    2010-07-23 23:10:20

  • I would like to start a new record starting with 2002 can i remove the scores that are now posted or do I have to start a new page

You can, but I don't recommend it. The system is designed to track multiple years of data. It will separte your stats by year on the front page.

If you want to delete all your scores you can do so by clicking the scores link on the bottom toolbar and then clicking delete next to each score.

NOTE: You can only delete your own scores. If you are logged in as someone else use the logoff button and log in as yourself.

  • I set up a group. In the box "recent rounds by your friends" my name comes up several times but none of my friends show up. How do I fix that?

It only shows the most recent 5 rounds. You must play much more often than your friends. Many people like to see their own scores in there as well. I will add it to the todo list to make a user selectable preference to only display other peoples scores in the recent rounds list.

  • The course I play on most (Pine Acres) had the USGA rerate the course. The ratings went from 70.3/120 to 70.7/129. My handicap went from 18 to 20. How do I enter the new data so that my handicaps (home course and Meeks) again agree?

This also applies when the holes on a course are re-arrainged. In these situations, you should add a new set of tees with the new rating and slope. This will allow the system to keep track of your previous scores played under the old layout. Be sure you are descriptive when adding the new tees so future golfers will know which ones to choose.

Go to the course home page and click on manage tees link.  From that page you can "duplicate" the tees and then edit and rename the new set of tees.  You should then archive the older tees -- we need to keep those for historical rounds played when that rating / slope was correct.

  • Can I print out the information that you have compiled about my handicap and the courses that I have played

You can print from any page on the site using your browsers print button. To print all your scores try the scores button on the bottom toolbar.

The "Anatomy of your handicap" link on the home page will show you your last 20 scores that count twoards your handicap. Send me sugesstions if you'd like to see another layout (perhaps courses you've played with average score??)

  • I have a friend that lives in Germany and spends some times in Florida. I would like to have him invited to try this site and want to know if he can enter courses that are in Europe.

Absolutely! There are many courses from all over the world in the system. The only issue when entering courses outside the US is that they do not always have a slope and rating (That is typically assigned by the USGA). So your friend would have to estimate the slope and rating. When doing so they should use the following guidelines:

    • Rating: Approximate value a scratch golfer should shoot on this course.
    • Slope: A numeric rating of the difficulty of the course. Average slope is 113. An easy course might be only 100 the toughest courses can be up to 140+.

Just use your best judgement. If you play an international course and do not agree with the rating, send me an email and I'll see about changing it.

  • How about providing hole-by-hole statistics for a given golf course. For instance, I play one course almost exclusively. I would like to know my average score, relative to par, for each hole. That is, for hole 1 my average score is +0.9, for hole 2 it is +0.3, etc.

The course walk shows this one hole at a time. To get tot he course walk, click on the score while viewing the details of a round. I put it on my todo list to make a screen similar to the match scorecard that will print out average per hole for all members of a group so you know when you should press!

If you have less than 20 scores the following table is used to determine the number of rounds that will be counted twords your handicap index.
Warning:Be wary of betting with anyone with less than 7 scores as the basis of their handicap.

    Number of Scores Cutt-off
    5 or 6 Lowest 1
    7 or 8 Lowest 2
    9 or 10 Lowest 3

  • I entered a wrong for one of the members of my group and would like to edit it. When i try to edit a score that is not mine it won't display his score with the edit funtion. Will he have to make this correction ?

Yes -- any member of a group may add scores for other members, but you may only edit or delete your own scores. You will have to have them make the correction. If you are keeping scores for a group of people log out as yourself using the log off button on the bottom toolbar and then log back in.

  • I entered a wrong score for one of the members of my group and would like to edit it. When i try to edit a score that is not mine it won't display his score with the edit funtion. Will he have to make this correction ?

Yes. You can only edit or delete your own scores. Even if you were the one who added it for someone else. This ensures that your scores will not be tampered with and will not change unless you do it.

    2002-03-02 08:01:36

  • I submitted a score of 102. On the recap,it states that my gross score was 102, there were 0 strokes and my net score was 102. Why is this?

This was your first score -- so the system doesn't have a handicap for you yet so no strokes are assigned. Add another score and you should see the strokes you get for that particular course show up based on your handicap index.

    2002-03-11 21:47:38

  • Can I enter scores that I play by myself that won't show up in the Group scoring that I have?

No. All scores you play are visible by your group members. This is to ensure the accuracy of your handicap by providing peer review. If you play a round with someone and they don't enter it in you know they are sandbagging.

    2002-03-27 22:27:11

  • I love this free service, is there anything I do to help out?

There are several things you can do to help make the site better.

  • How can I refresh all previous scores and start anew for 2002?

This is not really recommended. The system is designed to keep track of mulitple years of scores and keeps separate stats for each year. Your handicap will carry over from year to year. But if you really want to start over, you can go to the scores page and delete all of your scores by clicking on the delete link next to each score. NOTE: You can only delete your own scores.

  • I was invited to join the Guys golf Group but cannot seem to find the group. Can you help?

You'll have to ask the owner of the group to add you. Only the owner of the group can add members. Send them an email with your username and they should be able to add you. Once they add you, you can sign up to receive emails when group members play from your personal info link on the bottom toolbar.

  • How do you change your E-mail address?

Click on the personal info link on the bottom toolbar, edit the email address and click save.

You can also adjust other preferences like color scheme, whether or not you want to track putts, greens in regulation (GIR), fairways hit etc. If you are in a group you can select whether or not you want to recieve emails when other members of your group play.

  • I have submitted 13 scores.I realize that my handicap is determined by the lowest 5 scores. In the section on anatomy of handicap,it appears that two scores of 93 on 4/4/02 and 4/26/02 at Peachtree Golf Club and Country Club of Fairfield are being used to calculate handicap versus two previous scores of 91 and 92 at CCV-Tuckahoe Creek and Marsh Harbour on 7/28/01 and 4/18/01,respectively. Why is this?

The rounds with the lowest Handicap differntials are used, NOT the rounds with the lowest gross scores. This can sometimes be confusing.

The reason for this is that the handicap differntial is the true indicator of how well you played. It is calculated based on the difficulty of the course as defined by rating and slope. Using the differential you can compare your performance when you play from the white tees one day and the blues the next.

For example: If you play from the white tees and shoot an 85 and then the next day play from the blue tees and shoot an 86 -- which round is your better performance? To find out compare the differntials for each round. Most likely the 86 from the blues will have a lower differential indicating it was a superior performance.

  • How do I logon as a different user? I have tried to logoff and go to the home page and it brings me up as the same user.

Logging off using the log off button on the bottom toolbar should clear the cookie that identifies you to the system. • How do I log in a score from a friends computer?

If you are both in the same group you can add scores for each other by selecting your name from the dropdown on the enter score screen.

If you are not, and assuming your friend is already logged in, you will have to log off by clicking the button on the bottom toolbar. Then when you click the home page you should get the login screen, and you can log in as yourself. But setting up a group is the better way to go. Click here for more info about groups

  • Could you explain the scoring statistics section ? I do not understand the decimal places.

The scoring statistics shows the average number of birdies, pars, bogies etc you get on a given 18 hole round. So if it says 4.2 in the par column that means you get an average of 4.2 pars per round.
The sum of all the statistics should be 18.
This seemed to make it more meaningfull than just showing total pars or percentage of pars of total holes played.
2 decimal places is just the level of percision I chose to display it probably is more detail than you need to see.

  • My group members have played many times however only the first time played shows the champion? From the readings each time group members and champion play shouldn't that show a new champion if it changes? And If so, why doesn't it show this. It looks like only our first match is used to determine the champion.

If the champion plays it should show up. If you have a group memeber who wins, and then never plays with other group memebers the champion will never change. We have that happen sometimes when an out of town player steals the trophy. It can be a long time before we even have another title match. Please send me the group name where you think it is not working correctly.

  • I am trying to add a new member to my group who does not have acomputer. When I try to my "new account" form, putting his name with my computer, the form will not accept any "how did you learn, etc." info. What now?

I think the problem you are encountering is that when adding an account (even if it is your first), you must select something from the drop down describing how you heard about the site. Simply entering in the details will not work unless you choose other from the dropdown.

  • The delete doesn't always immediately remove a score. I get the Java confirmation question, but the score remains. I had to log off to have it removed. Is this a bug?

Most likely you were using your back button to return to the scores page after deleting a score. This is just causing your browser to redisplay the scores page you came from using a copy cached by your browser. The score has actually been deleted properly. I'll fix it so you can click continue and it will refresh the scores page showing the score removed.

    2002-06-16 22:44:21

  • How do i take myself out of a group?

Click on the personal info link on the bottom toolbar. On that page there is a list of all the groups you are a memeber of with a link to Remove next to each. That is also where you can sign up to receive emails when members of your group play. Just be sure your email address is correct.

    2002-07-14 08:03:48

  • In the champions catagory one of the members of the group is champion, but he is in 2nd to last on handicap, and does'nt have a good score posted. How can this be, am I not understanding what this accually is?

People with high handicaps can easily win matches -- that is what the handicap does, evens the field.

In your case I suspect that this golfer played a good round when playing with a group memeber and then has not defended his title. Once someone becomes champion the only way to unset them is to play them. When other group members play without the champion it is not considered a title match and will not result in a change in champion.

I realize this may cause situations where an out of town champion doesn't provide members of the group a shot at the title for extended periods, but that is the way it works. In these situations you need to challenge / heckel / shame them in to palying again.

    2002-08-06 22:03:08

  • How do I correct the slope and course rating that I entered on a new course that I put into the system? Also need to correct the pars on a couple of holes.

For now the only way to correct a mistake in the slope or rating of a a course is to email it to golfadmin@fairwayfiles.com. I can update the rating and slope, but it will only take effect on scores that are added or updated after I make the change. Scores entered when the slope was wrong will need to be edited and re-saved to use the new rating and slope. (NOTE: This is by design because if a course is re-rated I don't want all prior rounds to be recalculated using the new slope -- this would change handicaps unknowingly to people)

When you know a course has been re-rated by the USGA It is often better to simply adding a new set of tees with a descriptive name (i.e. new or with as of date) so that the older scores will stay in the system with the older rating and New scores can be added.

It is always a good idea to compare the rating and slope on the card with the system when adding scores and report any discrepencies.

    2010-07-23 23:19:56

  • I have a USGA handicap, how do I load it so that I start with an accurate index in fairwayfiles.com

Unfortunately you cannot just "Load" your existing handicap. The reason for this is that as you add more scores the system needs to know which scores to drop out of the calculation since the handicap is only based on at most the best 10 of your last 20 scores. So it is very important that as you enter scores you use the correct dates. And if you play multiple rounds in a single day the second round should have round #2 so it will be dropped after round #1 on that day.

  • My wife and I golf together and most courses have different tees for men / ladies. How can we track a champion in our group if the system only reconizes people teeing of the same tees? I finally beat her but it doesn't record as we played off different tees.

This was a bug, but it has been fixed. The daily details and comparison graphs now show all people who played the course on that day, even if they played different tees.

To see your scores on the same page for comparison click on the Date in the recent rounds by your friends section.

  • The course hole handicaps are for each set of 9 holes. How do I enter the hole handicaps?

For courses with 3 nines, each combination of nines needs to be entered as a separate course. Assuming you have white, red and blue nines, I suggest using names like: Rancho Bernardo - White-Blue Rancho Bernardo - Blue-Red Rancho Bernardo - Red-White Just try and be consistent with the naming so it looks nice in the list. Then each set of tees can have a different slope and rating for each of the 3 combination. Handicaps will typically be entered 1-9 on each nine. You will have to adjust them. The front nine being even numbers from 2-18 and the second nine odd numbers from 1-17. For example the BLUE - WHITE course : WHITE nine (Front) Hdcp 1 => 2 Hdcp 2 => 4 Hdcp 3 => 6 Hdcp 4 => 8 Hdcp 5 => 10 Hdcp 6 => 12 Hdcp 7 => 14 Hdcp 8 => 16 Hdcp 9 => 18 WHITE nine (back) Hdcp 1 => 1 Hdcp 2 => 3 Hdcp 3 => 5 Hdcp 4 => 7 Hdcp 5 => 9 Hdcp 6 => 11 Hdcp 7 => 13 Hdcp 8 => 15 Hdcp 9 => 17

  • How do I enter a new course?

First, be absolutely sure that the course is not in the system.

The best way to do this is to do a search by partial name. For example: If you are looking for westwood country club, just type in west in the name field on the search page to be sure it isn't in the system with a variant spelling.
    This will prevent duplicates like

    • Westwood GC
    • Westwood golf and country club
    • Westwood country club
Or better yet do a search by state and scroll thru the list.

The worst way to try and find a course is to search by city, because many courses are actually in a different city than you may think.

Once you are sure you have a course that is not in the system, you will find a link to add a new course at the very bottom of the search results screen. Click this link and fill in the form. Remember you will also need to add at least one set of tees before you can add your score.

Important: Please take care when entering new courses, Use mixed case for course names and locations -- this makes the lists appear much nicer.

    2002-10-29 22:01:37

  • Before I could scroll through my state course listings.I cant now. Why?

People had complained about the slowness of loading all courses for some of the larger states. You can still get to the courses by state by clicking the link next to the state field on the course search screen or by entering your state.

You can now click the Show ALL link on the search results to see all results matching your query. This is more like the old way -- but be forewarned that lists greater that 100 courses may lock up browsers with limited memory.

  • How do I enter a score?

    To enter a score:

    1. Do a search for the course you played by either:
      • Clicking the courses link on the bottom toolbar
      • Clicking on the all other courses link on your home page
      • Clicking on the prevously played courses link on your home page
    2. When searching for a course, only enter part of the course name which will be more likely to find coruses that may be spelled incorrectly. Or if this doesn't work search by state. (A link to add a new course is found at the bottom of the search if you played a course that is not in the system)
    3. From the search results page, click on the Enter Score link next to the course you played.
    4. This will present a list of tees in the system for that course. Select Enter score link next to the set of tees you played. You should verify that the rating and slope match the scorecard you have.
    5. Fill out the scorecard presented.
    6. Click save score

Note: Highly recommend you enter hole by hole details and only use the fast add entry of front and back nine scores when you don't have a copy of your card. Many statistics will be calculated for you if you enter hole by hole details making the site more interesting.

Note: Depending on how you have your preferences set the scorecard presented may or may not show fields for entering number of putts per hole, Fairways, greens in regulation. If you want to track these things and they don't show up on your data entry screen. You should edit your preferences by clicking the personal info link on the bottom toolbar, or Click here.

  • Can you have two handicaps one for the summer and also one for the winter i see my handicap going up because of the condition of the course in the fall and winter.

You could, but most people don't play enough rounds to make an accurate handicap starting over every 6 months.
If you choose to do this, create a second login for yourself and identify in the username which is winter and summer.
Remember you handicap is not accurate until you have 20 rounds in the system.

Find the course you want to print a scorecard for (using the course search link on the bottom toolbar). Ont the search results screen click the scorecard link. This will prompt you to select the tees and the members of your group who will be playing. When you click the Print scorecard button it will calculate each players course handicap and create a scorecard that shows which holes strokes should be given.

    2003-01-25 12:30:49

  • I'd like to enter scores for friends that I play with regularly. Can I do that?

    Yes!
As long as they have an account on the system. See other faq's for how to log off and create an account for your firends without computers.

All you need to do is create a group. Add your buddies to the group by searching from the find users link, checking the box next to their name and clicking on add to group.

When any member of your group logs in and goes to the enter score screens, they will have a dropdown to choose whose score they will enter.

It is common for one person to take the card home and enter the score for others. But I recommend doing it yourself so you can record notes about your round and enter additional information like number of putss, greens and fairways. This will allow you to get lots more info from the site to improve your game.

  • I am a member of two groups, but I do not want one of the groups to have access to my other group scores through me, how can I stop that?.

They will not see members of your group by default. Only members of groups to which you belong will show up on your home page under recent rounds by your friends and in the drop downs for adding scores.

So members of Group A can see others who are in Group A, but will not see Group B members unless they also are a member of group B.

They are able to click on your profile and see your groups. However that is the nature of the site. Scores are publicly posted so others can ensure you are not entering all your scores accurately.

If you feel this is not appropriate, let me know, but for now this is by design.

  • If I only play 9 holes, can I enter in my 9-hole score?

No the FairwayFiles system does not allow 9 hole score entry.  You  can either estimate the unplayed hole scores (e.g. by doubling the 9 hole score) or wait until you haev 2 nine hole scores and enter them together as an 18 hole score.

  • I have played 20 rounds and understand that the lowest 10 rounds are used for my handicap. What happens after 20 rounds?

Scores begin to drop off in the order that they were entered. The best place to see what scores are included, and when they will drop off, potentially impacting your handicap is the Anatomy of your handicap link on the top left column of your home page.

You can also view the Anatomy Of anyone elses handicap from the link on their profile page. This helps to size up your opponents before you play, and to be sure they entered all their scores!

If you use netscape or mozilla browser the front and back boxes should display a running total as you enter each hole score. I think there is a bug in the javascript that causes it not to work for some browsers. (MSIE) in particular. It is on my todo list to fix this.

    2003-07-01 21:41:58

  • Can we track a handicap or calcutate stats on a 9-hole course?

Fairwayfiles handicap calculations only work on 18 hole rounds. If you play a 9 hole course you could create it in the system by entering the same 9 holes as front and back (you'll just have to adjust the hole handicap ratings (odd for front even for back so the system will take it.

Then you have 2 options for entering your scores take 2 9 hole rounds and enter it as a single round. Or just enter the same score for the unplayed back nine.

  • Who wins in a tie situation when the championship is being defended? Specifically, it looks as though the challenger wins over incumbent champ. Is that correct?

To break ties, the system looks at who got the lowest score on the number 1 handicap hole, if this is a tie it goes to the number 2 handicap continuing until a winner is found.

    2003-07-22 22:50:00

  • Can I add a nine hole course?

Not really because the handicap calculation is based on 18 hole rounds. If you want to put in a nine hole course you can enter the same holes as front and back nine and you will probably have to estiamte the rating and slope. Average course rating is a few strokes under par and average slope is 113 with easiest courses having 95 or so and hardest having slope of 145+

  • What is a "Cutoff Handicap"?

The cutoff handicap is the highest handicap differential that is included in the calculation of your handicap. Remember only the best 10 of your last 20 scores are used in the handicap calculation.

So effectively the you need to shoot better than the cutoff ( and better than your 20th oldest score) to improve your handicap. To see your cutoff handicap and other information about how they handicap is calculated click on the anatomy of your handicap link on the top left of the home page.

I plan to modify the entry screen to use javascript to check the box for GIR when you enter your putts if the score - putts + 2 = par, but you will be able to override this if you want. The reason I don't want to do this automatically is because sometimes I count putts from off the green to be more accurate reflection of how many putts I had. THis means that it would show I hit the green when I really didn't. But in these cases I'll be able to uncheck the box to have the system show what I want for the round.

  • My golf course is not listed in Michigan. How do I post my scores. The course is Bird Creek in Port Austin, MI 48467. What do I do.

Click on the Courses link on the top toolbar and then click on the courses by state and scroll through the list to be sure your course is not listed. Once you are sure it is not in the system (perhaps mispelled), you can use the add course link on the bottom of the page to add the course.

Not currently. This is on my todo list.

  • How do I change an incorrect tee or delete a score?

To delete a score click on the scores tab on the bottom toolbar. This will give you a link to all your scores and there is a delete link next to each one.

Note: You cannot delete (or edit) other people's scores -- even if you are the one who added the score for a memeber of your group. This is by design because I don't want other people monkeying with my scores after they have been posted.

Sometimes courses are re-rated or revamped changing the information for a set of tees (handicaps, ratings and/or slope). However, if there are scores entered we can't just update the course information or it will not be correct for the people who played before the course was re-done. To allow the system to maintain historically accurate information, when a course is re-rated I ask that you add a new set of tees, and archive the old tee set. You can do these things by clicking on the "Manage Tees" link on the courses home page.

There is a duplicate link that will make it easy to make a copy of the old tees and edit the changes.

Unfortunately there is a bug that says you do not have permission to edit a set of tees after duplicating them, but I'm working on fixing this.

  • My Group has weekly tournaments which not every member plays each week. Is there a way to have the champion be the person that wins that weeks tournament instead of being the reigning champ of the group

The Tournament feature will track champion of a givent tournament, and also provides tournament stats for all the categories like putts, birdies etc. It will also support multi-round tournaments on different courses, so you can use it when you go on golf vacations with your buddies.

  • Several of my scores report a handicap differential that is different from the handicap differential calculation. including the ESC adjustment. Why does this happen?

    2003-09-08 20:35:25

  • What is the max number strokes the system will accept on a par 3, par 4 and par 5? Is there any differance?

You are referring to Equitable Stroke Control (aka ESC).

The answer depends on your course handicap.

Click here for more information about how ESC is calculated.

Keep in mind, you should enter your actual score no matter how high, and the system will adjust for Equitable Stroke Control when calculating your handicap.

  • I play numerous courses which have varying slope ratings and course ratings, when playing a course with an extreme slope rating should I adjust my handicap accordingly or do it matter? If I should, how do I do it?

Use can use the scorecard link on the course search results screen and let the system calculate your course handicap for you. It also will display which holes you give or get strokes on. To calculate your course handicap (which is the application of your handicap index to a particular set of tees to determine the number of strokes you should get) Use this formula:

    Course Handicap = handicap index * Slope / 113

    2004-04-15 22:54:53

  • Can I extract just the games on one course and establish the handicap on that course only?

You can view the scores you've shot on a particular course, with totals and averages for each hole by clicking on the "Show my scores on this course" link on the course's home page. But you can't establish a handicap just from that course.

  • When I click on the Groups button, I get a main screen that says "Rankings for Friends of "My Name". I did not create this "group" and it doesn't show up as one of my groups in any of the group lists. I'm unable to make any changes to players in this group. There are a couple of players who are not consistent users of Fairway Files and I want them to be deleted. Any ideas?

The initial display shows all the people in any group in which you are a member. It is aptly named Your friends. Click on a group on the left to filter the list to a specific group.

  • How do I correct a score. On three holes, I marked greens and I should have marked fairways hit.

From the score details screen there is an edit link. Also from the scores page (link on bottom toolbar) there is an edit column next to each score.

Note you can only edit your own scores. This is by design because while it is commonplace to have someone enter the scores for the entire group if they keep the card, I don't want others to have the ability to edit previous scores and potentailly mess up my handicap at a later date.

  • What is a handicap?

    2004-03-28 08:49:38

  • What does the net score mean?

Net Score is the score you shot on that course less your course handicap. Your course handicap is your the number of strokes you get based on your handicap index and the difficulty of the course as indicated by the slope rating. Course handicap is calculated using the following formula:

    Course Handicap = handicap index * Slope / 113

When comparing scores between players of differing handicaps the player with the lower net score has probably played a better round.

    2004-04-15 22:43:28

  • I tried to print my scores (18) to no avail.Other screen items on other web sites print okay. Is the data protected?

  • I have just began using this system. I see that I can print a score card for match play. My question is there a way to create a score card for visiting guest such as member guest tournament. The only information I will have is their Handicap Index from their club and will calculate their strokes for our group.

Not at this time -- this is on the todo list though.

    2004-05-16 12:40:30

  • Why is the search not working I am trying to find the user that referred me to this site and I cant find him

The person who invited you must have used a different spelling of their name. Or gotten 1st and last names reversed. Some creative ways to try and find people:

    • Search by city and sate if you know where they live
    • Call them and ask what username they use -- this is unique
    • type in only part of their last name using wild cards (%) around it to match string anywhere in the name
    • Search by email address

      2004-05-16 14:21:41

  • Why is the search for courses not working I cant find the course by zip code or name but know the course is already in there becausev I have entered scores for it already

If you already played the course you can find it simply by clicking on the Previously played courses link on the left side of the home page. If not try searching with a partial course name -- this may help find it if it was misspelled when someone entered the course. If it was not added with the zip code you won't be able to find it when searching by zip code -- when you do find it please add the zip code to help out everyone else.

  • If my index is figured on the lowest ten of twenty why does my screen show 25 scores? Also, why when I enter my 21st score which is higher than the 10 already listed does my index increase?

All of your scores are kept in the system for historical purposes. However, only the best 10 of the most recent 20 differentials (not raw scores) are used in the calculation. To see which rounds are included click on the Anatomy of your handicap link in the quick links section (left side) of your home page.
Or Click Here for the Anatomy of your Handicap
Also you should follow the link on that page for Explanation of the handicap calculation.

    2004-06-01 23:21:20

  • I just entered a score that was the lowest 8th of my entries and my index went up. How is that possible? This is the second occurence.

While the Score may have been the lowest of your 8th, it may have been a lower Index (say if you had played an easier course with a low slope rating.) Or it could be as you get more scores added -- more are included in your handicap calculation. Which means maybe a higher score was included. Until you get 20 scores your handicap may be more in flux. For details on how the calculation works click on the Anatomy of your handicap link on the left of the home page.

    2004-06-01 23:16:21

  • In looking at my anatomy of scores, a 106 posted on 3/11/04 was used as one of the ten lowest but a 99 posted on 4/13/04 was not.??

    2004-06-03 17:19:18

  • In looking at my anatomy of scores, a 106 posted on 3/11/04 was used as one of the ten lowest but a 99 posted on 4/13/04 was not.??

The system uses your 10 best scores as determined by the handicap differential for the round with takes into account the difficulty of the course. Shooting a 106 from the back tees on a tough course may be a better score than shooting a 99 from the white tees on a easy track. You should always verify the Rating and SLope of the course before entering your scores to be sure the difficulty of the course is correctly being applied to your score.

The Handicap differential allows you to compare your rounds on different courses and tees evenly, and is what is used in calculating your handicap. See the link on the Anatomy of your handicap page for an explanation. Explanation of Handicap calculation

  • The group I play with will only give 75 or 80% of the handicap depending on whether you are playing "medal' or "match." Is there any way to configure your personal settings or group setting so that the score card will print out based on the reduced handicap allowances?

I wouldn't bet with people in this group -- they are trying to sucker you. The handicap calculations are made to make the playing field even -- if they give you only part of your handicap they are cheating you.

But to answer your question, no there is not a way to do this at this time. You'll have to get out your calculator to figure this.

You can not make tee times through fairwayfiles.com at this time. • Can I set up a group for 4 people, 3 of them do not have emails?

Yes you can do this. But you will need to create an account for each person ( even if they will never log in and don't have a computer or email address).

As the computer literate one of your bunch, you can create accounts for your friends (using your email address for those that don't have email addresses).

To do this log out using the log off button on the bottom toolbar and then click create new account link to make antoher account. You should keep a record of the usernames you used and passwords assigned in case they want that info sometime.

Then Log back in as yourself and create the group following the instructions on the Help With Groups Link on the bottom left of the groups page.

    2010-07-23 23:12:10

  • Can you please add stroke average to the stats?

Storke average does not have much meaning because if you play different courses you may play better but have a higher score. But there is a link to see all your scores for a given course that shows your average score per hole for that course.
Search for the course and from the course home page (which you get to by clicking the course name in the search resulst screen) use the link that says Show my scores on this course.

    2005-04-22 23:40:55

  • I deleted a score but it is still counted on my handicap. this must be a mistake? can it be fixed?

Deleted scores should are not included in your handicap -- unless you delete ALL your scores -- in which case the handicap is not adjusted until you enter at least one valid score -- that is it does not return to zero handicap. This is a known bug and I'll try and fix it when I get a chance.

Yes -- If no tees are listed it means that someone entered the course but probably did not have the card with them so they could not complete the entry of the tees. You should be able to add the details of a new tee from that page.

Yes. Click on the scores link on the bottom toolbar and next to each score is an edit link. This will allow you to change the date and or the scores or comments.

Note: You can only edit your own scores. This is by design, because I don't want people editing my scores after they've been put in. Even though you can add scores for other people in your group you cannot edit their scores. So enter with care when you are adding other people's scores.

  • I am trying to set up my husbands handicap also. When I put his name in to search him it comes up. But when I click on enter scores, it brings me back up. What have I done wrong? It just keeps defaulting back to my name when I try to enter scores for him

You need to create a group and add your husband to the group ( by searching for him in the search like you said you did). Then when you go to add scores you'll have a drop down to pick members of your group. You'll also see group members scores on your front page, and optionally get emails when they add scores ( you don't get the email if you add the score -- because presumably you know what they shot :-) See the help with groups page for more info.

  • I only played nine holes and am unable to save my score...why can't i just put in nine? Do i have to put in 18?

The system calculates handicaps based on 18 hole scores. You'll have to either estimate your score for the unplayed nine or take 2 nine hole scores and enter them as one score. At some point in the future I may modify the system to take 9 hole scores but not any time soon.

    2005-06-01 08:50:39

  • There seems to be a bug in the system. In our group for some golfers, sometimes the handicap index at he very bottom of the Anatomy of Handicap page is .1 higher than that shown for the same golfer on the Group page. I've checked the math and the handicap index at the very bottom of the Anatomy of Handicap page is correct. When you print a scorecard for a given course for the Group it appears that the incorrect handicap index on the Group page is used to calculate everyone's Course Handicap. This will make at most a 1 stroke difference in Course Handicap and only when the .1 difference in Handicap Indices between the two pages is enough to cause the Course Handicap to round up. But, in a competitive group it will cause trouble.

This will display the group members and they can check the box next to each persons name and then click the delete button at the top of the column. Delete all members of the group except yourself -- then click the personal info link on the bottom toolbar and click the Remove Me link next to the group name. You cannot delete scores you enter for other users -- they must log in and delete the score. (or you can log off and log back in as that user if you know their password).

This is by design because I don't want anyone to be able to mess with older scores. You only have to verify the new scores someone adds for you are correct, and know that the old ones can't be changed by others.

  • I have a "Group Champion" question: On June 16th six of us played, all with a handicap on your site. The person who shot the net low score (his gross score was 89 with a net low of 64) was not labeled "The Champion". The Champion that was listed shot a gross of 95 with a net low of 66. Why was the net 64 not labeled "Champion"?

This looks like a bug -- I'll have to look into it.

    2005-06-22 22:27:35

  • Every week that our group has played & used your site to track our scores it gives us a weekly "Champion" However last Sun just two of us played & that week is not listed, why?

Probably because the person with the trophy -- the current "reigning champion" did not play. So the match was not a title match. That is you must beat the current champion to take the trophy / title. I have on my todo list to modify the calculations to allow manual override when a person does not defend his title. I may also make a page that shows all matches between any memembers. But that is different from the Reigning Champ concept which the current page shows -- by design.

    2005-06-22 22:24:01

  • I was looking at previous scores. At the end I clicked on "more" but it did not give me additional scores. It stopped at June 9. Why is this happening?

    2005-06-28 21:58:54

  • I shot 76 on a par 68 course yet it says i was 9.2 over par for the day, i dont understand how.

It does not say you were 9.2 over par.

It says your handicap differential for that round was 9.2.

Each round is assigned a handicap differential which takes into account the difficulty of the course as measured by the course rating and the slope. The handicap differential for a given round is calculated using the following formula:

Handicap Differential = (Gross Score - Course Rating) * 113 / (Course Slope)

The Handicap Differential is a generic number that can be used to compare rounds played on different courses. This is the number that is graphed in the bars on the score graph the user profile screen. Your Handicap Index is calculated by taking the average of the best 10 of your last 20 handicap differentials. Then taking 96% of that number.

  • I play in Southern California, San Diego, with some guys who us the SCGA online handicap system. This system allows them the ability to enter 9 holes of golf played and have it apply to their handicap accordingly. Will Fairway Files ever consider this functionality?

  • Played 15 holes, then got rained out. Do I add the other holes so that with handicap I come out to par?

You should estimate your expected score on the unfinished holes. Not necessarily would this be par.. -- at least not for me.

    2005-11-19 15:10:48

  • Why is the system not using the lowest scores posted for computing handicaps? I reviewed the anatomy of scores for some in my group and found this problem for the Scottsdale Hackers.

It uses the lowest 10 differentials -- which is the score adjusted for the difficulty of the course as based on the slope. A low score on an easy course may not be as good a a slightly higher score on a much tougher course.

  • I am joining a club that needs your handicap to play in events. Is there a way to transfer the information from this site to the club for purposes of establishing a handicap coming into the club?

The best advise I can give you is to print out the "Anatomy of you Handicap" Page ( link is on the left top of the home page ) That shows you last 20 scores and should give them the info they need to validate your handicap.

  • How do you enter a score on a course that's not in the system?

First, please be absolutely sure the course you are looking for is not in the database. One of the hardest things to keep clean about the site is duplicate entries for the same course.

I recommend searching for all courses in the state and scrolling thru the list to be absolutely sure it is not in the system -- possibly with a slight mis spelling.

Then if you can't find it you'll see the Add new course link at the bottom of the search results page.

    2006-04-04 23:23:00

  • If you make 4 on a par 4, and you are given a stroke on this hole, is this considered a birdie?

This would be a net birdie -- but that is not counted in the statistics. They are based on gross statistics. This makes them more meaningfull to track improvement. If year to year you see your percentage of birdies increasing you must be getting better -- but if it was adjusted for handicap it would rarely change. But perhaps in the future we could add net stats as an option.

Yes.  Fairwayfiles does not charge for tracking your scores.  It allows everyone in your group, no matter how infrequiently they golf to track their scores and be part of your group.

    2013-07-27 23:21:54

  • I cant find a course and i cant find course link , what is toolbar?

The toolbar is the list buttons on the bottom of your screen. Click on the word "Courses" -- it is a hot link to the course search screen. From there you can search by name or location to find the course you played.

    2006-07-31 22:33:08

  • I entered a new course to add but it said it was aldready in the system but itwas the same name But IT Was at a diffferent Town SO know what do I Do?

If in fact this is a totally different course -- try making the name "slightly" different than the similarly named course in the same state. For example -- add the city after the name in parens -- i.e. The Oaks (Arlington)

The purpose of the restriction is that many people add "duplicate" courses which junks up the database, this forces them to at least think about it before they add a duplicate.

  • It would really be helpful if there was an "email your group" feature so we could email people in the group either as a group or individually. We had to have their email in the first place to add them to the group or invite them to join, so it wouldn't be a privacy thing. I just don't like having to dig through my desk everytime I want to email my group, it would be a lot easier if it was intergrated as a feature of the website. Can you do that?

This feature is in the works. But your friends will have to select an option in their profile to "Allow group members to email me".

You must log in as the user whose score you want to delete. Then click on the Scores button on the bottom toolbar and use the Delete button next to the score you wish to delete.

You may add scores for others in your group, but editing and deleting can only be done by the individual.

This is by design, because deleting or edititng scores can cause irrepairable damage, and I don't ever want to be responsible for loosing scores. I figure if someone adds a score to my account that is bogus, I can always delete it, but if they deleted my scores I wouldn't be able to recover them.

  • I entered a score of 70 for Hilltop Golf Course using the Black tees. After entering the score my handicap dropped by 2 full strokes! When I went back and looked at the slope and rating I see that the yardage is incorrect and I think the rating and slope as well. What can I do to rectify this? When I went back to edit I could change my scores but nothing else...

NOTEYou should always check the rating and slope before entering your score.

If you make a mistake you'll have to delete the score and re-add it under the correct tees. To delete a score click on the scores link on the bottom toolbar and then on the delete link next to the score you want to delete. Note - you can only delete your own scores ( this is by design because we don't want others to be able to delete your scores ever )

Be sure to print out a copy of your score before you delete it because once you delete it it is gone -- there is no undelete.

If there are not tees with the rating / slope that match the scorecard you may need to add a new set of tees with the correct information. To do this click Manage Tees link from the course home page and then click Add new set of tees.

Just log out and create a new account by clicking the create an account on the login screen.

You can both use the same email address -- that's ok. Just create unique usernames and I recommend that you form a group so you don't have to log out and back in when you want to enter scores. Any member of a group can add scores for other members using the drop down on the add score screen ( which only shows up if you are in a group ). This makes it easy for the person with the scorecard to enter everyones score.

  • We have a group of 20 and we have a range of handicapped golfers. most of us play from blus tees, >20+ handicapper play from whites and ladies from red tees. If everyone has an established handicap from fairwayfiles, do the 20+ handicappers still have to give up 2 strokes and ladies 3 if the blue is 73.1, white 71.0 and red is 69.8? Players are complaing that if it two strokes from white then they would like to move up a tee box and play from there by giving up 2 handicap strokes. Are we using the handicap system the correct way?? or are we misinterpreting the tee box rules???

While you can add scores for other members of your groups, You can only delete YOUR OWN scores. This is by design, because I don't want people to lose their precious information if another group member decides to delete their score. You'll have to ask the group member to log in and delete the incorrect score. • I belong to a country club and have a handicap rating. I play each week with a group and would like to be able to be part of the group and just input my current index/rating. How do I do this. All my score are posted at my country club and have been foryears. They keep a curent usga rating for me. ?

Unfortunately it is not possible to just enter your current index and begin to use the system to track your handicap.

The reason for this is that your handicap is based on the best 10 of your last 20 scores -- so as you enter a new score the 20th score will drop out of being used. If you just entered an index we'd not be able to calculate your handicap because we don't know what score drops off.

You should be able to get a listing of your last 20 scores and course played from your club and put them in -- if you don't have details you can use the quick add form on the score entry screen.

If you do this and the handicap doesn't match what your course shows, please send me an email at golfadmin@fairwayfiles.com

    2007-12-17 18:57:36

You probably didn't enter details for one of your rounds. Or in the case of GIR or Fairways, the system thinks you didn't track GIR if you don't hit any Greens so it doesn't include them.
On my todo list is to make a checkbox to include rounds with NO fairways or greens in the calculations.

Before you add a new course you need to be sure your course is not already in the system with a slightly different spelling. The best way to do this is to click on the courses link on the bottom toolbar and then click on your state and scroll through the list.

If you don't see your course, Click on the Add course link at the bottom of the list. But remember you'll need the scorecard in front of you for the rating, slope and hole by hole handicaps which are required.

You can only remove a person from the group if you are the group admin (i.e. you created the group).

This will show all the group members with a checkbox in the far right column and a delete button at the top of that column. Check the person you want to remove and click the delete button. If you don't see a delete button you are not the admin/creator of the group.

You can always remove yourself from a group from the personal info link on the bottom toolbar.

  • I was wondering why my handicap is lower than my husbands when we play the within 1 or 2 points of each other all the time. • I have tried to add Black Bear course in Backus, MN but the system won't accept it, I think because there are two other courses named Black Bear elsewhere in the state. I've tried several times.

This message is to try and prevent duplicates -- If you are absolutely sure that this is not the same as the other Black Bear courses listed in the system, add something to make the course name unique within the state. Maybe call it Black Bear (Backus).

    2008-09-22 19:48:35

  • In the Avg Fairways, Avg Greens, Avg Putts box, what do the numbers in brackets (33),(28), etc. mean?

Those are the number of rounds included in the calculations -- only rounds where you enter detailed info are included ( i.e. if you just entered your front and back score one round because you didn't have the card that round would not be included in your putting or other stats calculations.

    2009-01-02 08:16:03

  • My course has been re-rated. How do you change the slope and rating?

Add a new set of tees and Archive the old one. Give the new tees a distinctive name so you can identify it as new ( i.e. White (2009)

There may be issues archiving tees, so you may have to send me email to have me do that -- but you should be able to just create a new set of tees from the Add tee link on the course home page.

  • I am Australian, and wonder if you could add an option of using the AGU method for calculating handicaps - perhaps calculating them in paralle.

I don't know anything about the AGU method. Send me an email with the details of the calculation and I'll put it on the todo list ( but keep in mind I've got lots of things on the list ahead of this ).

  • Is their a way to print scorecards for the whole group that includes the no.putts, fairways hit, and greens included on the scorecard along with the hole by hole scoring???

If it has been re-rated you should add a new set of tees using the link on the course home page. Otherwise send me the correction at golfadmin@fairwayfiles.com and I'll update it. Thanks for helping keep the site up to date!

    2009-04-08 23:42:12

  • How do you calculate putts per hole? do you inlcude only putts from the green, or do you also include puts from the fringe or just off the green?

Add a set of tees for the senior tees. Just go to the home page for the course search feature. There is a link to add a new set of tees below the other listed tees.

You'll need the scorecard to enter the hole by hole par and handicap info.

You can turn off notifications when others play and be in the group but not get notified. To do this click on the personal info link -- then uncheck the email notification link next to the group you don't want to get emails for and click save.

  • Do you think this system would work as a stat program for a high school golf team?

You can certainly use it to track stats amongst your group. Just create a group and put all the team members in the group.

The charts would be very useful for your team, and the groups page will show rankings.

    2009-08-22 16:50:04

  • There seems to be a bug in the system, my index is too low, trust me, I'm not that good.

Your handicap index only uses at most the 8 best of your last 20 scores. So it will be much lower than your usual score -- it is a measure of your potential.

Also -- if you have less than 20 scores in the system it uses fewer than the best 8 so one good score can skew your index.

See the Explanation of how the handicap is calculated for more details.

  • If you play a best ball outing , can that score be used for handicap calculations?

No, In a best ball tournament your score is the result of other peoples shots as well as your own. So this is not useful in determining your handicap. Good for practicing your short irons maybe, but not for establishing a handicap. You'll have to do that on your own.
